What compromises electrical test equipment accuracy?

  • Environmental conditions affect the instrument during use and in storage. High humidity or extreme dryness, exposure to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and strong magnetic fields can all result in measurement drift. EMI and magnetic fields can cause permanent damage to sensitive electrical test devices.
  • Rough handling is a common cause of measurement drift. Physical shocks, drops and knocks can damage sensitive components, sensors and meters. After a drop, the equipment may appear to work, but may no longer be accurate. Recalibration is needed to be sure.
  • Out of range use exposes equipment to loads beyond its original specifications. Testing a 690V power supply using a voltmeter that is rated at 600V will cause drift resulting from the harmful electrical stresses on the device’s measurement circuits.

How to maintain electrical test equipment accuracy

Straightforward steps to minimise the impact of these factors include:

  • Correct storage and transportation help mitigate the impact of rough handling and environmental impact. Basic steps such as using shockproof, waterproof, Radio Frequency Interference shielded equipment cases eliminates many causes of measurement drift.
  • Making sure measurement devices are fit for purpose, and not out of range. If testing for specific RF emissions, the test device must be specified to measure the correct frequency ranges.

Even when protected, electrical test instruments require regular calibration, according to the manufacturer’s recommended schedule.
